Vote for New Kodi Logo

As many of you know, the pathway to the new name is only partially complete. Beyond the various legal steps still needed to be taken, we need to finally take a step forward in the design of the new logo. The logo that’s been posted on the alpha release threads has been an acceptable place holder, but now is the time to get serious about selecting something more lasting.
We need to choose the logo.
We’ve received numerous designs of all varieties in our logo suggestion thread. So many, in fact, that there are actually more submitted logos than currently active team members. Having an internal vote on which logos we like most is virtually impossible.
So instead, we’d like to continue pulling in help from the community. To start, we narrowed down some of the selections just a bit, so that logos that appeared to repeat themselves were eliminated. This still left 58 logos to consider. We then created a poll that allows anyone, users, developers, various grandmas and others to view the many different versions of the Kodi logo and actually vote for their favorite.

The Rules of the Kodi Logo Vote

First, please only vote once.
Second, this is ranked voting. That means you can say which logo is your favorite, which is your second favorite, and so on down the line. Often, those later votes can really matter in ranked voting. If you like, you can just rank a single logo as first and leave all the rest ranked 58th. Or you can rank a top 10 and ignore the rest. Or you can rank all 58 logos. The decision is entirely yours. You can even rank all of your top ten as 1 and the next ten as 2 and so on.
Third, many logos have added colors, backgrounds, or even additional words like “entertainment center.” When you are deciding, please mostly vote on the design of the wordmark Kodi and any attached icon design.
Fourth, the Foundation is obliged to make the final decision, but we will almost certainly pick from the top three or four, and unless there are serious legal or other objections, we will do our best to stick with the logo that the community prefers the most. Either way, the top few logos will all be sent to doghousemedia, where we will work with their design team to finalize the best logo we possibly can.
Fifth, and finally, before you begin voting, please look through all 58 logos. Our voting software randomizes the list for every new user so we can avoid people just voting on the first five they see, but this is a very serious decision with repercussions that could last years into the future. We want everyone in the community to be involved, but we also want everyone to take this vote as seriously as we do.
And that’s it. Here’s the link to the vote. Voting ends Friday, the 17th of October. We’ll see you on the other side.

DevCon

On a related note, we’re excited to announce that Kodi DevCon this year will begin this Friday the 10th of October and run through Sunday the 12th. Again, we’ll try to keep a liveblog running throughout to keep people up to date on various presentations and discussions. This year we plan on breaking out into smaller groups in the second and third day actively work on some things that benefit from real face time. We will also try to live blog as much of these break out sessions, but we may have less success at that point.

So, let's vote for our favorite media center apps.

Netflix on XBMC

Step One: Install Chrome Launcher and NetfliXBMC

NetfliXBMC Brings a Better, Remote-Controlled Netflix to XBMCEXPAND1
You'll need two add-ons to get this working, and you won't find them in the default XBMC repository. So, to install them:
  1. Download AddonScriptorDE's testing repository here. Save it to your Downloads folder (or wherever else you want).
  2. Open XBMC and head to Settings > Add-Ons > Install from ZIP file. Choose the ZIP file you just downloaded and it should install the repository.
  3. Head to Get Add-Ons and choose AddonScriptorDE's Testing Repo. If there isn't anything in it, head back to the Get Add-Ons Menu, press the "c" key to bring up the context menu, and choose "Force Refresh." If you head back to AddonScriptorDE's Testing Repo, you should see a list of categories.
  4. Head to Program Add-Ons and select "Chrome Launcher." Press Enter and install the add-on.
  5. Once Chrome Launcher is installed, head back to the category list and go to Video Add-Ons. Choose NetfliXBMC and install it.
Now, you should have all the necessary add-ons installed and you can continue to the next step.

Step Two: Configure NetfliXBMC

NetfliXBMC Brings a Better, Remote-Controlled Netflix to XBMCEXPAND
Next, you'll need to set up NetfliXBMC to work with your Netflix account and other preferences. Head to Videos > Video Add-Ons in XBMC, highlight NetfliXBMC, and press the "c" key to bring up the context menu. Choose "Add-On Settings" to get started. Here are some things you may want to tweak:
  • Account > Email and Password: Enter your Netflix credentials here.
  • Account > Single-User Account: If you have multiple profiles on your Netflix account, you'll want to de-select this (otherwise your browser will ask you every time, which isn't easily controllable with the remote). If you have multiple users using Netflix on the same XBMC machine, select the "Show Profile Selection on Each Start" option, which will ask you which user is watching every time you use the add-on.
  • Advanced > Delete Cache/Delete Cookies: Try these buttons if you experience problems logging in.
  • Advanced > Win Browser/OS X Browser: If you're using Internet Explorer or Safari instead of Chrome, you'll want to select your browser here.
Once you've gotten this set up, head into NetfliXBMC and try playing a movie or TV episode. If you experience problems, try fiddling with the settings to get it working, or check out the troubleshooting section at the bottom of this post.
If you can get a video to play, it's time for the last step: setting up your remote.

Step Three: Configure Your Remote (Optional)

NetfliXBMC Brings a Better, Remote-Controlled Netflix to XBMCEXPAND
If you control your home theater PC with a remote (rather than a mouse and keyboard), you'll need to configure NetfliXBMC for your remote as well.
NetfliXBMC is still  in the very early stages, but in our tests, it worked quite well. However, depending on your setup, you may or may not experience any issues. Make sure you've read this entire guide word-for-word, as well as the NetfliXBMC forum post. If you still have questions, that thread is the best place to ask them, especially if it's the result of a bug that the developer needs to fix. He's extremely responsive, so don't be afraid to let him know if you're having trouble! Best luck!

Vine for Android Gets Advance Features Update

After launching an improved camera experience and advanced enhancing instruments for its iOS app, Vine is giving its Android version the identical treatment.

The biggest addition by far is the choice to import videos. Similar to Instagram, this means users can shoot and edit movies with other, perhaps more sophisticated apps before bringing them in for the final upload. From the digicam display screen, simply press the upward arrow icon within the backside left-hand corner.

Clips can be previewed in Vine’s square-crop format and trimmed to six seconds or less. If you still have time remaining, you can import additional videos and Vine will stitch them to the end of your loop automatically.

Similar to the iOS app, there’s also a shortcut (the arrow icon with a cross in the middle) that lets you preview and delete the last shot. Particularly useful if you need to reshoot something, but don’t want to delete your entire Vine.

Long-time Vine users should appreciate the improved capture tools too. A wrench icon visible on the camera screen hides a bunch of advanced features: Today’s new addition is a “torch” mode that switches the flash on. iOS users were also given a new grid level and the option to focus lock with the front-facing camera, but neither appear to be available in the Android app.

After tapping the arrow within the high right-hand corner, you’ll be given a last preview of your Vine. Earlier than hitting the large green “tick” icon though, you can now press edit and unlock some extra enhancing options. These embrace the power to duplicate and trim specific photographs in your loop.

Humin : A Smart Way to Organize a Smartphone Contacts

We took an early sneak-peek at Humin, a better contacts app than default contact app for the iPhone, back in January. Lastly, it’s launched into the App Retailer within the US in the present day and it’s even higher than once we first tried it.

Humin works best when it’s placed in your dock in place of the default Phone app. It organizes your contacts in a smart way, replacing the normal alphabetized list with factors like your location and the day and time. Over time, the app learns which people are most relevant in a particular context and displays them first.
The search facility is just as impressive. It’s based on a ‘connection graph’ built up of data from Gmail, Facebook, LinkedIn and other sources. Our brains don’t organize the people we know in order of their surnames, but by arbitrary connections like ‘We met at a party in Paris’, ‘She works at IBM’, or ‘He lives in New York City’. Humin gets its name from a ‘human’ approach to search. When I enter ‘Works at The Next Web’, I get a list of all my colleagues. If I search for ‘lives in San Francisco’, I get a list of everyone in my contacts list from that city.
In the months since we first checked Humin out, the San Francisco-based team has been busy refining the product and now many people will be able to discard their default Phone app completely. The startup has arrangements with all major US carriers so that your missed calls and voicemail can be routed to Humin.
The app works well overall, aside from the odd minor bug here and there (the app insists that the company ‘The Next Web’ is called ‘Next Web’, for example, and former employees can show up in a company search, even if their data shows they’ve moved on).
Beyond these niggles that can be ironed out by the developers over time, the quality of the experience is only as good as the quality of the contacts data on your smartphone. To that end, there’s a feature that allows users to request updated contact details from people they know.
During the app’s beta period, it would mass-mail all contacts to request updated data, without it really being clear to the user that this is what would happen. Humin briefly developed a reputation as a spammy app among some early adopters, although CEO Ankur Jain says that the company learned from this experience. Now, requests are more granular, with users being able to select exactly who they want the app to contact. I can’t help thinking that FullContact’s API would be worth the company exploring for a smoother experience, though.
Jain sees Humin as a company built around “tech that thinks about people the way you do.” He describes the core technology underpinning the app as “like PageRank for contacts.” How this could be used beyond smartphones is intriguing. Jain mentions wearable devices and cars as markets the company is exploring, although I’m sure the enterprise market could find uses related to CRM too.
Humin is currently available in the US only but will open up to new markets over time, with a UK launch coming soon.
 Humin.
Update: After  this article being published, some users from the beta program  told us that Humin is still sending contact update requests out in their name despite them having deleted the app. We have contacted the company for clarification about the issue. Humin reiterated that the verification flow has been changed to stop bulk requests for contact details, adding that an option to cancel verification has been added in-app, and any users affected by such an issue can contact the company to have all requests switched off.

WPAP with Inkscape

After all this time i have new interest in art, that is so called WPAP or Wedha's Pop Art Potrait invented by Mr. Wedha Abdul Rasyid, an Indonesian artist, he was afraid that human getting older he cant make a realistic human potrait, so explored new way to paint human's face texture and skin color with some irregular shape, unlike van Gogh or Picasso WPAP is easy to learn, but unfortunately for me, a man who hate art since middle school, I find it too hard to learn, especially in the shape and  the color choosing.

Here is Mr. Wedha's art from the beginning

How to Check CPU Usagein Linux OSs

It’s somewhat trivial job to get details about how much of CPU time is consumed by Linux OSs, its parts or numerous software it runs, but fortunately there are numerous utilities making it doable to get it. A few of them are included into sure Linux distribution, other are not however most of tools listed below can be used to find out CPU utilization stats:

1. top
top is very old and important core utility coming with almost any Linux and Unix operating systems. It shows real-time system resources utilization (CPU, RAM, swap file etc.) to administrators via console, here is the part of it’s output:
top - 16:05:38 up 3 days, 6:08, 2 users, load average: 0.54, 0.54, 0.61
Tasks: 100 total, 2 running, 98 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 5.3%us, 1.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 93.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 515984k total, 497928k used, 18056k free, 13988k buffers
Swap: 1502068k total, 92956k used, 1409112k free, 129096k cached
As this tool provides a lot of useful information, it makes sense to read its manual page: type man top.
2. atsar
sar, atsar are other old tools providing system activity reports including CPU load we need. Here is an example of sar’s usage:
viper@viper-desktop:~$ sar -u 2 5
Linux viper-desktop 2.6.20-17-generic #2 SMP Mon Jun 9 22:08:13 UTC 2008 i686 07/04/2008
16:13:58 cpu %usr %nice %sys %irq %softirq %wait %idle _cpu_
16:14:00 all 3 0 0 0 0 1 97
16:14:02 all 0 0 0 0 0 0 99
16:14:04 all 0 0 0 0 0 0 100
16:14:06 all 23 0 0 0 0 0 76
16:14:08 all 0 0 0 0 0 0 100
As you might see CPU utilization was almost 0% for two seconds after the command was executed. BTW, here is the description of the options sar was started with:
-u showed statistics about CPU utilization (average and per cpu) with 5 intervals of 2 seconds.
3. ps
ps is one the most used core utilities every Linux or Unix administrator uses as this utility with short name shows processes run in the system. If you need to get information about how much CPU or RAM resources are consumed by certain process, just run this:
viper@viper-desktop:~$ ps u 23988
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
viper 23988 0.0 0.6 5760 3280 pts/0 Ss 15:54 0:00 bash
where 23988 is PID of the process (can be get from the output of ps ax).
And be sure look the manual of those commands for  ore details.
